Talk: Content-Free Trauma
Justyna Anna Nowakowska is a hypnotherapy practitioner based in Manchester, UK, with a particular interest in supporting clients affected by trauma. Her approach recognises that many people want help but may not feel ready, or may simply prefer not, to describe every detail of what happened to them. She therefore focuses on the client’s present response, helping them work towards change without making disclosure or detailed analysis of the story a requirement.
Her content-free trauma work is informed by training with Karl Smith and has been further developed through her own therapeutic work with clients. Justyna places particular importance on safety, consent and pacing, ensuring that the client retains a sense of control throughout the process. She also emphasises careful observation, appropriate therapeutic language, professional boundaries and knowing when another form of support or referral may be needed.
At IHC27, Justyna will present “Content-Free Trauma”, introducing practitioners to the principles behind this approach and exploring why it can be valuable in trauma-informed practice. Her session will consider how therapists can respond to emotion and experience without needing the complete personal narrative, while still working responsibly and compassionately. Her aim is to offer a practical framework that respects each client’s readiness, privacy and autonomy while creating meaningful opportunities for therapeutic change.
